In den USA hat der Sierra Club die "Cool Cities" campaign gestartet:

From hybrid vehicle fleets in Charlotte, to green buildings in Austin, and homes powered with renewable energy in Seattle, local governments are moving forward with innovative energy solutions that curb global warming, save taxpayer dollars, and create healthier cities. At a time when the federal government is failing to act, these local leaders are moving America toward a safer and more secure future."

As the Chinese curse goes, we find ourselves living in interesting times and it appears that the future will be even more interesting. With this in mind, now is the time to prepare both for the short and long term. Building resiliency into your household and sustainability into your lifestyle will become increasingly essential.
To the extent that you are prepared for short term emergencies:
- You are in more control of your circumstances during a crisis
- You become less of a drain on centralized disaster relief efforts
- You are better able to assist others
To the extent that your lifestyle is sustainable & self-sufficient:
- You are better able to provide for yourself and your household on an ongoing basis
- You ease the burden on the environment, reduce your ecological footprint
- You role model self-sufficiency and sustainable living practices for others
This requires nothing less than a paradigm shift from a dependent consumerist worldview that is predicated on vast global markets and cheap fossil fuels, to a more local and self-reliant one. It is no small transition, particularly in a culture that doesn't "get it" yet. Like any significant challenge, it is best taken on in stages and it can’t be done in isolation. But start now – with putting together a plan and looking for kindred souls to share the experience with you.
